Educational Outreach in Nicaragua
In 2016 and 2017, I organized a week long conference in rural Jalapa, Nicaragua. Goals were closely aligned with broader goals of the annual Brain Awareness Week. I coordinated funding, travel, and logistics for graduate students and post-docs at the University of Utah to develop lesson plans in Spanish. Additional support came from American Association for the Care of Children (AACC). If you would like access to these lesson plans in both English or Spanish you can access them here.
Cinema Science Podcast-Episode 11
Fellow Neuroscience PhD students Heidi Febinger and Anne Gibson invited me to join them for an impromptu conversation about the Neuroscience behind Zombism. Together they host the excellent Cinema Science Podcast. It is a great way to learn more about science through popular media as a talking point. I had a lot of fun, and maybe I’ll be lucky enough to be invited back! Have a listen at the link above.
Society for The Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in SCience (SACNAS)
SACNAS aims to further the success of Chicano/Hispanic and Native American students in obtaining advanced degrees, careers, leadership positions, and equality in STEM fields. I have been thrilled to participate in our local chapter at the U of U as treasurer, outreach organizer, and as a member of the national society as well. If you aren’t already a member, definitely join or consider starting a chapter at your own institution. I met some of my favorite people through SACNAS.
